What Is Spirometry?




A spirometer measures the volume of air that is inspired and expired by the lungs. This information is used to diagnose lung conditions and monitor the progress of treatment. Spirometry is a common test that is often used in clinical and epidemiological research.

Spirometry is one of the most difficult tests to perform, and the results depend on the ability of the person taking the test to successfully inhale as much as possible, exhale with as much force as possible, and continue to do so until they have completely emptied their lungs or are unable to do so. The American Thoracic Society and the European Respiratory Society have performance standards for spirometry that can be followed to ensure that a patient can provide acceptable and repeatable results during a respiratory function test.

The spirometer can be a variety of different types, including water-filled spirometers, bellows spirometers, and air-filled spirometers. These devices use pressure transducers or ultrasonic sensors to measure the gas flow in and out of the lungs. A spirometer may also be equipped with a computer that analyzes the data to derive tidal and inspiratory volumes and expiratory flow rates.

Some spirometers also measure peak flow, which is the volume of air that is expelled in a given time. This measurement is a more reliable indicator of pulmonary function than spirometric measurements that are only measured using water.

During the test, your healthcare provider will place soft clips on your nose to keep you from blowing out of your mouth while breathing in and out of the tube connected to the spirometer. Your healthcare provider will also tell you how long to breathe in and out. You should not experience any pain while the test is being done, but you may cough a little or feel lightheaded or tired from breathing in and out so deeply.
