A Concentration in Family Studies Is Beneficial For Students in All Majors

The study of families and the genes that run in them is known as genetic epidemiology. Researchers in this field study whether a disease is more common in some families than in others. If a disease does run in a family, this is known as familial aggregation. When this happens, the risks of the disease are higher.

A concentration in family studies is beneficial for students in all majors, as it gives students a unique insight into the dynamics of families. This course of study also prepares students for a variety of careers that deal with families. These careers include teaching, ministry, law, and family practice. The concentration can also prepare students for graduate school, if they choose to pursue this field.

This degree program can be completed in two years. It can lead to an Associate of Arts Degree in Family Studies, or a Diploma in Family Studies. The curriculum is interdisciplinary and students take courses that offer a variety of sociological and historical interpretations of family life. Students will also have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers from the field to gain an informed view of the issues and challenges facing families today.

A degree in family studies will help Família  students develop critical thinking and reasoning skills. They will also gain a broader perspective on other subjects. Students can apply this knowledge to other areas of study, allowing them to make better decisions in their careers. For example, when you study marriage and divorce, you'll learn about the role that marriage plays in a family's life.

Another degree in family studies focuses on human development, from early childhood through adulthood. Students will explore the ways in which the environment affects human growth and how different factors can foster or hinder healthy development. Students will also work on their own projects and have the opportunity to engage in an internship. They will learn about human development from a practical perspective, and will be prepared to apply their knowledge and skills to practice in the field.

A degree in family studies prepares students for graduate training in a number of different fields. Graduate studies in family studies can lead to careers in social work, community health, counseling, and mental health. The curriculum is research-based and will prepare students to apply new knowledge and theories to their own lives and those of others.

There are five concentrations available in human development and family studies. Each concentration has different requirements, and a minimum of 120 credits is required to graduate. At least half of these courses must be upper-division (300-400) level. Students must declare at least one concentration during their undergraduate years. Some students choose to declare two concentrations. Once declared, these concentrations will be listed on transcripts.

Students in the concentration in family studies can choose to study in an on-campus setting, or completely online. All required FSHD core courses can be taken online. Students in the concentration must also complete WMU's Essential Studies requirements.
